Immersed in foliage

The chestnut groves of Castione, on the Brentonico Plateau overlooking Vallagarina at the foothills of Monte Baldo, are a sight to behold in autumn. They are tinged with the strong, warm colors of autumn and yield a delicious fruit: the Castione chestnuts, to which a festival is also dedicated and which are still expertly used in the kitchen just as in the past. 

A Walk Among the Chestnuts

Castione and Brentonico can be reached in about twenty minutes by car from Rovereto and Mori. We are in the center of the Monte Baldo, which some consider to be the Botanical Garden of Europe because of its rich flora embellished with so many endemisms. From Castione to Brentonico runs the easy path of chestnut groves: ancient and majestic, with their reassuring foliage giving their most beautiful and colorful version in autumn. They really seem like the wise old guardians of these villages and slopes.

The walk is on a paved road from the center of Castione to the Brentonico sports field and takes about 35-40 minutes. The elevation gain is less than 200 meters; the start from Castione is uphill. Castione chestnuts are large in size and peel easily. One third of Trentino's chestnut and marroni production comes from here. The scent of autumn is served.

Autumn Toast

The scent of autumn, yes, but also the taste of this poignant season. We can find it in our glasses, sipping wines from Cantina d’Isera, another village nestled in the hills of Vallagarina, not far from Rovereto. Chestnuts and wine: the perfect toast. With a Trentodoc riserva, perhaps. Or the musical red Marzemino, the wine beloved by Mozart. Lagrein, Rebo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Schiava are the other wines that we recommend you taste.
