Travel by train to discover the castles of Trentino

The Train of the Castles is now a regular spring and summer event in Trentino: a fascinating journey through history and art to discover the most beautiful castles in Trentino, but also the flavors of tradition: in fact, each visit includes a tasty break with the best local products.  

The tour kicks off from the Trento-Malè station in Trento, a capital city rich in history and art, and heads to Val di Sole. Here the first stop is Castello San Michele, così chiamato dal santo a cui era dedicata la cappella. named after the saint to whom the chapel was dedicated. It stands on a spur of rock, and its mighty keep, which is about 25 meters high, is the most distinctive architectural element. 

The tour continues to Castel Caldes, a Gothic-style manor resulting from the meeting of Venetian, German and Lombard cultures. Inside are vaulted ceilings, wooden panelling and frescoed rooms; outside is a small church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was built in the late 16th century.

We then arrive in Val di Non to discover two important castles in the area that are well preserved and rich in history: Castel Valer and Castel Thun.

Castel Valer is almost a fortified citadel. It is still inhabited by the Spaur counts and owes its name to the precious San Valerio chapel located inside. Its rooms have many precious objects and are fully furnished. Its tower has an octagonal plan, is 40 meters high and is the tallest tower in the whole of Trentino.

The majestic Thun Castle is one of the most beautiful and visited in the area. Perched on a hill in a panoramic position with respect to the entire Non Valley, it is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications consisting of towers, walls, ramparts, patrol path and moat which dates back to the 16th century.
