Once through the gate-tower crowned with swallow-tailed battlements, the visitor is invited on a real journey through time. The castle is a heritage of FAI (the Italian National Trust) and has undergone major restoration. A characteristic element is the tower that stands between the eastern walls: it is the Picadora, where death sentences were carried out in the past.
A military garrison as early as the Longobard era, during the Middle Ages the castle was transformed into a feudal court, a destination for intellectuals and artists who left traces of their passage: one cannot help but be enraptured in front of the splendid fresco cycles of the 14th-century Veronese school in the Love Chamber and the House of the Guards.
Culture, Food and Wine
At the end of the visit, a glass of wine produced a little further down the valley can be tasted inside the walls. Alternatively, guests can discover the secrets of winemaking directly in Cantina sociale di Avio. Inside the store, the staff ensures hospitality, expertise and comfort for an accompanied tasting and thus grasping the characteristic notes of local wines and gems of Trentino gastronomy. Don't miss the typical Enantio Terra dei Forti (highly recommended is the Riserva) and the 2013 Trento Doc Sarnis millesimato. mong the cheeses from the caseificio di Sabbionara, the famous «affogato» must absolutely be tried.
