Rotaliana and Paganella
From the mountain peaks one can appreciate bird's-eye views of the entire Plain. Sun-drenched vineyards and orchards stretch from the hills to the Adige River and draw the landscape, while country villages are characterized by noble palaces and small churches. In Rotaliana, culture and food and wine blend harmoniously thanks to the central elements of the area: the local farmers, who grow grapes and apples of the highest quality with hard work, commitment and pride.
Typical products
From the vines of the Piana come Trentodoc metodo classico - a white wine that follows re-fermentation in the bottle, and Pinot - whose coppery-skinned grapes are produced particularly in the northernmost area, on the border with Alto Adige/Südtirol. There is also no shortage of grappas, which farmers make by hand by distilling grape pomace. You can sip them in the shade of arbors after a long day's work or simply at the end of a nice hike. Also typical of this area is the Zambana asparagus tender and fiber-free, which is harvested by hand in spring following traditional rules. Last but not least are apples such as the classic Golden and the traditional Red Delicious apples, bright red in color.
Between wine and history
The Piana Rotaliana is a true wine paradise. Even Goethe referred to it as &the garden of vines,” while Cesare Battisti called it “the most beautiful vineyard garden in Europe.” The name of this land is inextricably linked to the undisputed prince of peasant tables and the goblets of discerning tasters: Teroldego Rotaliano. The presence of this doc red wine is documented as far back as the 14th century, but some evidence dates back as far as 200 AD. The first occasion when this red wine, which comes from native grapes, gained international fame was the Council of Trento (1545-1563). Appreciated by the cardinals, its name even ended up in the chronicles of the time. Not surprisingly, right in the heart of Rotaliana is the prestigious research and development center of the Mach Foundation.
